31st Northern National Art Competition Features L.A. Judge

Nicolet Area Technical College

It's less than two weeks before the opening reception of the Northern National Art Competition at Nicolet College in Rhinelander and this year's judge has whittled down the entrants to those being displayed.

Art Gallery Director Katy Ralph says judge Mark Steven Greenfield had a large number of works to pick for the intial cut...

"....I get to see the 400 images before he made the initial selections. I can tell from that whole range of work he had to go through that he chose very interesting selections to be in the show. There will be 92 pieces in there...."

The 31st annual competition displays a wide range of arts styles from 34 different states. More than $8,500 will be awarded, including three $1,000 Awards of Excellence.

Katy Ralph talks about judge Mark Steven Greenfield...

"...His own work is political. It's about being an African-American in our culture. I've watched him speak, I found a new video of him speaking last night, and he comes across as full of warmth and humor. We look forward to spending time with him...."

Greenfield  served as director of the Watts Towers Arts Center and the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Greenfield’s work has been exhibited extensively and deals primarily with the African American experience and in recent years has focused on the effects of stereotypes and racial politics on American culture.

The opening reception is September 29 at Nicolet College Art Gallery at 5:00 p.m. Tickets for the recetion are available at Trig's store and Diane's Frame Shoppe in downtown Rhinelander.
More information is available through ArtStart in Rhinelander or the Nicolet College website.
