Deadline Nearing To Find Next Northwoods Emerging Artist

One talented person is Forest, Langlade, Oneida and Vilas counties will get a chance to further their artistic career but the application deadline is nearing.

Northern Arts Council is sponsoring the Emerging Artist Grant Program. Jaron Childs is on the board of the Northern Arts Council.

He moved to the area from arts grant rich Minnesota where he noticed it wasn't so fertile, money-wise, for artists...

"...I'm on the board of the Northern Arts Council, but I'm also an artist. After moving to the area from Minnesota, I noticed how few grants there were in this state for individual artists. I started thinking we should start right here, locally, get something going and the board was, on board..."

This is the second year of the program. Applicants can be from any form of artistic background. Childs says the idea is to give a new artists a leg up...

"..Especially someone whose career is at a turning point. Maybe they have a project that is just starting to get off the ground and they have some momentum...."

Emerging artists are defined as people early in their artistic careers, regardless of age. Applicants can't be enrolled in a degree-seeking program or utilize the funds for business purposes. This grant awards an artist or a group of artists up to $3,000. Deadline is December 1. The grantee will be notified in early March.
