BJ's Frozen Tozen Tournament Latest Casualty Of Poor Ice Conditions

While the abundance of snow has been a benefit to folks who snowmobile and ski, the snow has proven to be a negative for activities done either with or on the ice. Deep snow and slushy conditions are continuing this week. Temperatures also have been mild, meaning ice is not forming.

The latest winter event that has been cancelled is the Frozen Tozen Ice Fishing Tournament scheduled in Boulder Junction for Saturday.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Theresa Smith says the event has been cancelled due to lake conditions...

"..Too much snow, too much slush. We don't want people getting stuck out there when they're fishing. But we are still going ahead with our raffle drawing which is going to take place at 5 p.m. at Headwaters Restaurant and Tavern. The proceeds from the raffle go to the Boulder Junction Area Boat Improvement Fund..."

Smith says there's still a large number of items available for the drawing this Saturday. The fund has grown because of the Frozen Tozen tournament and began in 2007. Smith reports over the past 12 years, more than $15,000 has been given to projects which ease accessibility to area lakes.

The most recent donation of $6000.00, went towards the purchase of new aluminum roll-in pier at Upper Gresham Lake as well as improving the White Sand Lake Landing.

Other recent cancellations due to poor ice are the Hodag Lions Fisheree in Rhinelander and the Loop Around The Lake Event in Minocqua. The Lions also will continue to hold a raffle. The Ice Castle in Eagle River also was cancelled this year due to poor ice conditions.
