Wisconsin Communities Pushing For Consitutional Amendment: Rothschild

www.publicdomainpictures.net

The head of the campaign watchdog group Wisconsin Democracy Campaign says Wisconsin is among the leading states hoping to have a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court ruling called Citizens United. In 2010, the Citizens United ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court set a new precedent for outside contributions to elections, says Executive Director Matthew Rothschild...

"....corporations can give unlimited amount of money and unions and associations can too, for that matter, to elect this candidate or trash the other candidate that they don't like. They can do that out of their own corporate treasuries as long as they aren't coordinating with the candidate themselves..."

Rothschild says the decision set in place the notion that money is speech and corporations are persons, and gave well-heeled  interests a huge advantage over those without as much money. He says there's been a grass roots movement to overturn the decision by attempting to pass a constitutional amendment...

".....there's a new movement here and around the country to overturn Citizens United by amending the U.S.constitution and saying clearly corporations are not persons and money isn't speech and we can regulate what goes on during campaigns...."

Those TV ads you see that don't directly endorse a candidate but make attacks on opponents are the direct result of the Supreme Court ruling.
