More State Aid Reduces Rhinelander School Taxes

More money from the state of Wisconsin means good news for School District of Rhinelander taxpayers.

The school board Monday passed the 2017-18 budget and levy.

Director of Business Services Marta Kwiatkowski outlines the key numbers...

"....our levy for this school year is going to be $25 million...the mill rate is going to be $11.09 of fair market value. So that's a 60 cent decrease per thousand. Obviously if your home is worth $100,000 it's about a $60 decrease..."

The decrease is compared to a year ago and reflect the school district portion of your tax bill. Kwiatkowski says the budget produced more money for state aid....

"...our general fund levy is going down by $916,000 and our state aid is increasing by $1.1 million. This is great news for the taxpayers because larger state aid then less money is required from levy..therefore the mill rate is less. That's why we're seeing the decrease in levy this year...."

Kwiatkowski says this shift of funds with the state supplying more money is rare and has happened only twice in the 12 years since she's been with the school district.

Total expenditures are just over $40 million.
