The body of an unidentified female homicide victim was exhumed from a cemetery on Tuesday.
The Jane Doe was originally found on September 14, 1947, in Cassian.
After two autopsies, it was determined that the cause of her death was strangulation, and the case was ruled a homicide.
Her identity, however, remained unknown for the better part of a century.
Oneida County officials are working with the FBI to do what they can to find the woman’s family.
"It was a team effort. We had a lot of people there, everybody was involved. Nobody was just standing around, everybody wanted to pitch in and wanted to be a part of this spectacular moment. When we figure out who she is, that comes back to the group of people from yesterday," said Crystal Shoub, Medical Examiner for Oneida County.
She says that the identification process can take years, and they had to act quickly before Jane Doe's DNA, and anything else that might help identify her, was lost forever.
