DNR Reminds Property Owners About Baiting And Feeding Deer Ban

With hunting seasons beginning, the DNR is hoping the public helps out by following rules to help cut down on Chronic Wasting Disease.

DNR acting wildlife health section chief, Erin Larson, says nine new counties have been added to the counties under a baiting and feeding ban. Several Northwoods counties already are under the ban.

Larson explains....

"...These bans are put in place if there's a captive or wild CWD or bTB(bovine tuberculosis) positive. If a positive is found within the county, the ban is in place for three years. If the positive is within ten miles of a county, that county will have a ban for two years.... "

Larson says at the end of the two years, the ban is lifted unless a new positive-CWD deer has been found. The rules still allow for small-scale feeding of birds and small animals...

"...So the feeding devices have to be within 50 yards of a house or human dwelling. They have to be at a sufficient height so deer can't have access to them. Up high enough that's on a bird feeder or such like that..."

Larson says the best thing to do to get a clear review of the baiting and feeding ban is to go to the DNR website and put 'baiting and feeding' in the DNR searchbox.

There are also DNR biologists in Rhinelander, Woodruff and other communities that can help out.
