Like many non-profit organizations, NATH and Frederick Place have had to cancel event after event because of the pandemic.
But the Rhinelander-based homeless shelter is putting a creative twist on a traditional fundraising event this week.
Every year, Frederick Place invites the community to gather and enjoy some of the best soups in the area during its Soup for Shelter fundraiser.
“Knowing that we can’t gather, we have had to try to come up with something creative to still have this event,” said NATH and Frederick Place Executive Director Tammy Modic.
Instead, it’s calling this year’s event Soup for Shelter – COVID style.
Volunteers will offer a range of hot, cold, and frozen soups for a free-will donation.
“We are looking at chili, a creamy wild rice chicken, and a pot roast soup that Dinky Diner will be cooking for us to have available,” Modic said.
Soups are available on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the former Casa Mexicana parking lot, and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Farmers Market at Pioneer Park in Rhinelander.
Chili is being served all month long at Sweetwater Spirits and Resort in Eagle River, with donations going to Frederick Place.
“Right now, it costs approximately $50 per day per resident for them to stay at Frederick Place, for them to receive the shelter as well as case management,” Modic said.
The pandemic has put Frederick Place about $15,000 behind its fundraising goal for the year.
“We have yet to be ever empty in the almost ten years that we’ve been in operation. The concern and the need is still there and appears to be continuing to the future,” Modic said.
