Stevens Point Mayor Encourages Spending Stimulus Dollars Locally

Stevens Point Website

Many people with direct-deposit information on-file with the IRS will find another six hundred dollars in their bank account.

Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza says if you are fortunate enough to not need that money for bills or housing, consider spending it at a local business or local restaurant.

“It’s not meant to go buy a ton of stuff on Amazon… which helps but that takes money out of the community.”

Wiza says stimulus money is meant to prop up local communities.

“And that’s where that shopping local and supporting local comes in.  Treat yourself to a nice dinner or go out and buy yourself a new jacket or with the snow we had last week maybe a new shovel or snowblower.”

Wiza says if you have seen your income or livelihood impacted, then make sure you take care of yourself first.

“Get caught up on bills, even pay in advance a little bit if you are anticipating being affected by COVID here in 2021.  Maybe tuck it away a little bit, in case you see something coming.

Those without direct-deposit information will either get a paper check or a debit card for their payment. That may take a little longer to arrive.
