Three Lakes Runner Up in WIAA Division Five Championship

Two Central Wisconsin girls basketball teams met in the WIAA State Championship game.

Three Lakes played the Assumption Royals for the title.

Assumption becaume Division 5 state champions with a final score of 55-48. It's the third state title in the program's history.

A post on the Three Lakes School District Facebook page said “We are so, so proud of you, Lady Jays!!”

The post went on to say “You’ve given us all a reason to smile today.”

Two get to the championship, Three Lakes broke Black Hawk's 75 game streak in the first semi-final game Thursday morning. It was a neck-in-neck game that ended 51-48 in Three Lakes favor.

Then, in a battle of dominant defenses, Assumption Royals edged out the Central Catholic Macks.

The two well-matched teams, one offensively dominant and one defensively dominant, take the court to see who takes home the Gold Ball.

The Division 5 Championship game started off close, with both remaining within three points of each other for most of the first half.

It's multiple Three Lakes turnovers and capitalizing on free throw attempts that allowed Assumption to pull ahead.

Three Lakes had 9 turnovers in the half, Assumption 5.

Jessie Grundhoffer was an important athlete for Assumption, scoring 10 of the teams 24 points. Right behind her is Ainara Sainz de Rozas with 9.

Three Lakes had a 9-0 advantage in offensive rebounds and second chance points.

At one point Assumption had a double digit lead, but a physical game causing fouls helped Three Lakes close the gap back down to 8.

Assumption leads 33-25 heading into halftime.

Coming into the second half Emily Bohn was quick to score two for Assumption, Kara Sowinski three for Three Lakes.

Assumption foul trouble put Emily Bohn on the bench with four fouls with 11 minutes left. She would later return after multiple point drive by Three Lakes.

Solinski would prove to be an important shooter for Three Lakes in the second half, scoring 14. Mollee Gruszynski was at one point able to tie the game.

As the game got closer, so did shooting percentages. At the same time the energy increased for the fans and the teams.

For Assumption, the last minute was about defense and holding onto their four point lead. For Three Lakes, it was about using fouls to try and get the ball.

Assumption would hold out on that lead, becoming Division 5 state champions with a final score of 55-48. It's the third state title in the program's history.
