Boulder Junction To Ask Public About Getting More Broadband

The Boulder Junction Economic Development/Connect Communities Committee is holding two meetings soon to look at options for high-speed internet.

The committee's volunteer chair Dennis Aukstik says a 2017 survey found a long list of potential challenges. He says the number one challenge reported was broadband internet access...

"...We took those answers to heart and have now begun a process to try to identify what our broadband strengths and weaknesses are. What our challenges are in expanding our broadband. We are seeking public input on those questions..."

Dennis Aukstik says while some people have found satisfactory internet ability, many others have little or no broadband access. Aukstik says with a communications era just in it's early years, broadband is a key to economic development...

"..We really do see this as an opportunity to market Boulder Junction to young families, entrepreneurs, and new environmentally-friendly businesses for the future of our town. We also believe that expanding broadband will stabilize and diversify our economy..."

Aukstik says broadband also invests in education. He says a local school official reported students at home have different download-upload speeds and it makes it impossible to use the internet to send school work to them via the web. He says the expanding senior population will be able to use more tele-medicine with higher-speed internet. He says tourists also want access on vacation.

The meetings are set for Tuesday, August 20 at 6:30pm or Thursday, August 22 at 10:30am at the Boulder Lake Room at the Boulder Junction Community Center. Aukstik invites anyone interested to come to the meetings and participate.
