A person has tested positive for COVID-19 in Marathon County, the closest confirmed occurrence of the disease to the Northwoods to date.
The Marathon County Public Health Department confirmed the positive test Friday morning.
“The person has a history of travel within the United States in the recent past,” the department said in a press release. “The individual is currently isolated at home. County health officials are working to determine how the person may have become infected and will be contacting individuals in the next few days who have come in close contact with the patient.”
Isolation will follow for anyone who has been in contact with the patient and shows symptoms.
As of Thursday afternoon, there were 155 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin. The closest encroachments to the Northwoods were in Wood, Outagamie, and Bayfield counties.
On Thursday evening, Gov. Tony Evers announced the first two COVID-19 deaths in the state.
