Most of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest campgrounds and recreation sites are open to visitors. But Forest Supervisor Paul Strong has closed the group campsites for the rest of the recreation season because of the COVID outbreak and the need for social distancing.
The group sites closed include Boulder Lake group site, and group sites at Chippewa Campground(Hardwoods Loop), Morgan Lake, Picnic Point and Stockfarm Bridge.
Forest spokesperson Hilary Markin says while the group campsites are closed at those locations, the non-group sites remain open...
"We have an order on the Forest limiting the amount in groups to 10 people or less, so those groups typically have a lot larger groups that camp at them. We've closed them for the rest of the year. That order remains in place, so groups visiting the National Forest should be in groups smaller than 10..."
Reservations at group sites will be cancelled and refunded through the remainder of the recreation season.
Supervisor Paul Strong's order limiting the size of groups of 10 people or less per group across the entire Forest remains in place until further notice. Markin says along with this, recreation event special use permits, large gatherings and the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center remain closed.
Markin says the majority of activities on the Chequamegon-Nicolet Nationl Forest remain open to visitors.
