January is National Blood Donor Month and there are opportunities soon to help people who need blood.

American Red Cross blood representative Marc Sutton says January is a tough month for blood donations...

"...Being up here in the north, the weather and weather cancellations. We also rely on high schools and colleges and they're off on break as well as people taking off for the Christmas holidays. We're also starting to see colds and flu which also impacts blood donations. All of that combined makes for a very difficult month of blood donations....."

Sutton says every two seconds in the U.S. someone needs blood. He says there are donation events coming soon...

"...On January 29, we'll be in Rhinelander at the Americinn. That's an afternoon blood drive from 11:30 to 5:30 p.m. Next Thursday, January 30, we're going to be at Lac du Flambeau Elementary School. They're doing a great job with the elementary school kids helping to push that out into the community and the school is very supportive of it. Hopefully people in the Lac du Flambeau area will come out to the school and support that...."

Sutton says information on these and other blood drives are available at the website redcrossblood.org He says you can find out about drives in this area and other information. He says by doing it online you can complete your health history from the website and save time when you come in to donate.
