You might be in line for a pay day you didn't know was coming.

The state Department of Revenue has sent out more than 20,000 unclaimed property checks worth more than $2 million to people who matched up with unclaimed property.

Additionally, the department sent 301 letters to potential claimants work more than $2,000 each. Department spokesperson Erin Egan says after a certain time period, businesses turn over dormant or unclaimed accounts.

She says a common one is an uncashed payroll check. Egan says there is more money available...

"...Every year after we get the property we do a systematic match of our unclaimed property records and tax returns filed in the last year. If we can find a match in properties up to $2,000 we will automatically mail out a refund check to people. If the property is worth $2,000 or more, then we send them a letter, telling them how to file a quit claim to get their property back..."

Egan says the Department of Revenue website has a link that provides information on the refund checks and the letters that are going out...

"The website also has a link to our on-line searchable database. You can look to see if you have property that we might be holding for you that didn't fit the data-matching criteria...."

The return program began in 2015. Since that date, the Department of Revenue has returned $24.6 million in unclaimed property.
