Minocqua Plan Commission Turns Down Hotel Plans

Town of Minocqua

MINOCQUA – On a split vote, the Minocqua Plan Commission is again recommending that the town board also vote against a request by an Eagle River developer to build a 9-unit hotel just north of the Island of Minocqua.

A motion by commissioner Mark Pertile to recommend approval of the conditional use permit for Glenn Schiffmann of GPS Inc., failed 3-4. He picked up support from Bill Stengl (a town board member) and Phil Albert. A subsequent motion to recommend denial passed 4-3. Voting to deny were town chairman Mark Hartzheim, newly seated commissioner Mary Taylor, Tom Church and Joe Hegge.

The proposed development is on parcels that formerly housed Mom’s Laundromat and the Bay View Inn. Trygve (Trig) Solberg owns the property.

Jim Rein, Jr., of Wilderness Surveying and agent for the developer, reviewed updated site plans that he says now shows there is adequate parking spaces and no longer any right-of-way infringement on Lakeview Drive. The town chairman worries that problems with guests attempting to park trailers will haunt the town in the future if the hotel is built as presented.

The matter now returns to the town board, which will make a recommendation to the county planning and development committee for a final decision.
