The City of Rhinelander is hosting another deer hunt this fall.

After the public complained about a large city deer herd, the city council approved a bow-and-arrow only hunt in 2006. The hunt has been on-and-off since that time depending on the size of the herd.

Police Chief Lloyd Gauthier outlines the dates for the hunt...

"..Bow season runs from Sept. 14-Jan. 5, 2020. But in the city, your not going to be able to hunt during the gun deer season which is Nov. 23-Dec.1. You also will not be able to hunt during the muzzleloader season which is Dec. 2 through the 11th. We also don't allow bow hunting on Halloween...."

Along with the state regulations, there are other rules to follow...

"You're required to stop and city hall and see the clerk's office and ask for a Hunter's Request For Bow Hunting. That will give some personal information about yourself, what land your looking at hunting at. There's a second piece where a landowner has to give approval for a hunter to hunt on their property..."

Gauthier says after completing the forms, they department will check to see if the prospective hunter is eligible to bow hunt. He says he does a site check on the prospective hunting property to make sure it's safe to hunt on.

Chief Gauthier says if there are questions to contact the police department or the city clerk's office.
