Unemployment ticked up slightly in January in the Northwoods.

State Labor Market economist Mitchell Rupp in Wausau gives January’s numbers…

“Forest is at 6.3(percent), Langlade is at 4.7, Lincoln 4.0, Oneida 5.0, and Vilas, 5.1…”

Forest county jumped up 1.5 percent from December and one point higher than a year ago, Iron county is virtually unchanged from December and down and still down more than a half-point from one year ago. Vilas county is up a half-point from December and a year ago, Oneida is up one point from December and a half-point from a year ago. Price county is up a half-point from December and almost unchanged from a year ago. Lincoln and Langlade counties also saw rises in unemployment from a year ago.

Rupp gives the overall totals from the region…

“..The northcentral numbers are currently at 3.9, which had an increase of .8 from the previous month, and an increase of .2 from the previous year…”

Rupp says the uptick in Northwoods unemployment follows the yearly trend where more people are out of work in the cold weather months. Rupp says you can access economic data for the state at wisconomy. com
