Vilas County Jail Full Body Scanner in Operation

Ken Anderson

A full body scanner is in operation in the Vilas County jail to prevent illegal contraband coming into the jail as explained by jail Sargent Alisha Wagner.

“Although we do strip searches, there are situations where possible illegal substances are hidden in body parts,” Wagner said. “Each person is scanned as they enter the jail system each time, including those on work release.”

She said if they see something different, they can compare the present image with past images since they are stored. “If we suspect something we have the option of sending them to a hospital for medical clearance.”

Jail administrator Bill Weiss said the unit is a Tek 84 out of California and uses low dose x ray licensed by the state. It was purchased for $169,000 and was placed in a location that did not require remodeling.
