January is National Blood Donor Month and there are opportunities soon to help people who need blood.

American Red Cross blood representative Marc Sutton says January is a tough month for blood donations...

"...Being up here in the north, the weather and weather cancellations. We also rely on high schools and colleges and they're off on break as well as people taking off for the Christmas holidays. We're also starting to see colds and flu which also impacts blood donations. All of that combined makes for a very difficult month of blood donations....." geralt

Northwoods residents can help out as the American Red Cross is bringing a blood drive to Lac du Flambeau Thursday to get some badly needed donations.

Blood representative Marc Sutton details the drive...

"...On October 10, we'll be holding a blood drive at Lake of the Torches Casino in Lac du Flambeau. So if anyone is heading to the casino or are in the area we're going to be at the casino in the middle entrance by the hotel from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help meet the current blood supply needs...."

For one day early next month, Pioneer Park in Rhinelander will look like a M.A.S.H. unit. Like a real MASH unit, the intent is to save lives.

A blood collection on that theme will be held July 8 at Pioneer Park from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Collection spokesperson Jerry Shidell says summer is a time of increased need, but blood supplies are lower....
