Langlade County Supplies Fine Firs for State Capitol

Justin Russell

A grower in Langlade County is sending a fleet of Christmas trees to Madison Tuesday morning to decorate the state capitol. Jim Draeger says his trees were selected for their shape, color and height.

“I was kind of proud that they picked my trees . I mean you never tell a mother her baby’s homely, you always say they look good. If someone tells you they look really good, you’re even happier.”

He’s sending a 25-foot balsam fir for the state capitol rotunda.  Four fraser firs will appear in the square outside the capitol building, plus another in the governor’s house.

Draeger says state officials eyed his tree farms over the summer while inspecting for pests and disease.

“And about two weeks later he called me and said, I’ve decided you have by far the best trees. And they wondered if I’d be interested in helping them with their program. And I said sure, I’d glad to – I’d be honored.”

Draeger is donating the six trees.  He says the tallest one is at least 20 years old.
