The Lac du Flambeau tribe continues to support more Indian gaming in Wisconsin. Lac du Flambeau president Tom Maulson has sent a letter to Governor Scott Walker in support of the Menominee proposal for an off-reservation casino in Kenosha.
The Menominee plan has gained federal approval but is being held up by opposition from the Forest County Potawatomi and Ho-Chunk Tribes. Joe Hunt is an off reservation gaming consultant for Lac du Flambeau.
“We are supportive of anything that is gonna help tribal peoples. And we’d like to see the Menominee build that business because it will really help the tribe.”
Governor Scott Walker says he won’t approve the Menominee proposal until all of the state’s 11 tribes support it. But Hunt says that’s setting up a nearly impossible hurdle.
“Based on the conversation and the discussions that are going on right now, its’ a very high bar for the tribes to meet. It doesn’t appear that the Potawatomi tribe is bending.”
Hunt says it’s too early to say how this controversy could affect Lac du Flambeau’s plans for an off-reservation casino in Shullsburg.
Governor Walker is expected to make a decision on the Kenosha casino this week.
