Conover Will Keep Bike Trail Plan, Funding

Emily Bright

The discussion on whether and where to allow ATVs in Vilas County has drawn passionate crowds to town meetings throughout the fall. Last night was no exception. The debate between ATV and silent sport enthusiasts in Conover appears to have found a peaceable solution at Monday night’s town meeting.

The 3 ½ mile Great Headwaters bike Trail, or GHT, is fully funded and shovel-ready this spring, but its funding does not allow ATVs. At issue specifically is the 100-foot stretch where K connects with highway 45—a stretch that both the bike trail and ATV riders would like to use. After speaking with planners of the bike trail and the Department of Transportation, town supervisor Tom Timken Jr. stated,

“I was encouraged when I heard that they would entertain moving that trail over a little bit so that both entities could use that 100 foot swath.”

In this plan an ATV route would run alongside the bike trail for 100 feet between K and K. There would be a barrier of some sort dividing the two trails.

The town board voted unanimously to continue the GHT trail as planned and to work with ATV groups and the DOT to obtain necessary permits. An informational meeting this Thursday night to discuss plans for ATVs in Conover.
