Youth Training In Basic Business Skills Under Development

en.wikipedia.org

Members of Oneida County UW-Extension recently provided the Oneida County Board with an overview of what Extension provides the community.

Extension Youth Leader Lynn Feldman says she's developing a program for business leaders in the Rhinelander, Minocqua and Three Lakes areas next spring. She wants to have the businesses train young people 14 to 18 years old to do some basics of business in anticipation of hiring them during the summer tourist season perhaps for their first jobs..

"....customer service skills, how to work with employers, and communicating certain needs like time off. It could be how to make change...what are basic work ethics when you get your first job, that type of thing...."

County Board member Carol Pederson thought the idea is a good one...

"....you go out into a workplace, a retail establishment and my goodness! it's amazing to me that people are as uneducated and unfamiliar with how to deal with a customer....I think this is a wonderful approach...."

Feldman says the young people going through the one-day seminar would get a certificate they present to employers when applying for jobs. She says that certificate would give the job seekers a leg up on other applicants who might not have had the basic training.
