Vilas County Passes 2014 Budget

courthousehistory.com

The Vilas County Board of Supervisors Tuesday night approved a budget for 2014 that calls for a small increase in the property tax rate. Vilas county has one of the lowest property tax rates in the state. The increase will amount to $8 per $100,000 of valuation. The budget is a compromise….in order to maintain a county services, provide for a number of important projects, and maintain a healthy fund balance.

The board conducted a public hearing prior to the budget vote. The only person to speak was Jean Nitz of the town of Lincoln. She expressed concern about the plan to borrow $500,000 for capital projects.

Supervisor Lorin Johnson’s attempt to strip the bulk of the funding for the Vilas County Economic Development corporation was rejected overwhelmingly. The Economic development group is working on a new manufacturing incubator, which is expected to provide good paying jobs. The corporation has opened up two business incubators for start-up companies---one in Eagle River, the other in Manitowish Waters.

In other action, supervisors approved applying for state monies for snowmobile trails in Vilas county, as well as for the short ATV trail in Land O’ Lakes.

A resolution was withdrawn from consideration that would have urged Governor Walker and the state legislature to permit Wisconsin counties to contract with the federal government to receive federal Medicaid funding to improve the state’s Badger Care program.
