Camp American Legion Gets OK For 225 More Acres

www.legion.org

The Natural Resources Board Wednesday approved a change in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest master plan requested  by Camp American Legion.

The change allows use of an additional 225 acres to provide accessible trails and hunting opportunities at Camp American Legion in Lake Tomahawk.

Forest Superintendent Steve Peterson says the American Legion has operated the camp on Big Carr Lake and Little Lake Tomahawk since 1925 with a number of leases. He says there was an agreement that if they needed more land again, the state would work with  them...

"....so this master plan amendment approves us entering into a lease for the full extend of the property that they had prior to 1965..."

The updated lease expands Camp American Legion property to a total of nearly 300 acres which is the same area and acres as the previous lease from 1944 to 1964. That land will be used for the exclusive use of the American Legion and will be closed to the general public. Since 1964 the DNR has leased 75 acres surrounding the camp buildings.
