Budget Passage Reactions Vary By Political Party

Wisconsin.gov

Two differing views of Tuesday's vote by the State Senate over the $73 billion dollar budget bill..

(Tiffany) "...I think it's a fiscally responsible budget that covers the priorities for the people of the state of Wisconsin....(Bewley).."we ended up passing a very bad budget, a budget that does not reflect the values of the people of Wisconsin...."

The first voice is Republican Tom Tiffany(R-Hazelhurst) and the second is Democrat Janet Bewley(D-Ashland).

Tiffany says in the Senate version of the bill there's more money for for high cost school transportation aid, more money for FAB LABS like in Three Lakes, and $100 more per student for local aid, plus sparcity aid for rural schools  and preserving Seniorcare. Tiffany says it's the least amount of borrowing done by the state in 20 years.

State Senator Janet Bewley

Bewley looks at education funding differently, saying education like the UW System budget was deeply cut, and funding restoration still doesn't make up for cuts made . She said a number of non-budgeted items were inserted into spending package with little debate and decried the changes to Family Care, changes to shoreland zoning and local control.

The Assembly is working on its version of the budget, and should they make changes, the bill will return to the state Senate to work out the differences. It is expected to go to Governor Walker to consider yet this week.
