Hermit Island Rezone Petition Withdrawn

www.laketomahawkwi.org

One of the two owners of Hermit Island on Lake Tomahawk has withdrawn a petition to rezone the entire island “Recreational” from “Single Family” after the Minocqua Town Board voted 3-1 to deny it.

The Mallery Family as Island Properties, LLC has a primary residence and one cottage on their parcel, the maximum number allowed in Single Family zoning. But they want to build an additional cottage as permitted under Recreational.

The town board Tuesday did not object to the additional cottage, but said Island Properties has enough land to create another parcel for it. Supervisors worry a zoning change would set a precedent for other islands in the township.

Supervisor Sue Heil explains...

“Because if you rezone this to recreational, you’re going to have other islands coming in wanting to rezone and you’re not going to be able to say ‘no’. For instance, the Squirrel Island is a big island that condos or something could go up. Even this island, some things could go up that you don’t want to go up in the future.”

On Wednesday, Minocqua attorney Greg Harrold told the county Planning and Development Committee that Island Properties wishes to withdraw the petition. The committee then cancelled the public hearing on the rezone request.
