Forest County Gets The Latest State Rustic Road

Wikimedia Commons

A 27-mile segment of roadway near Wabeno has joined the state's Rustic Road program.

The program preserves scenic, lightly-traveled country roads. Top speed limit is 45 miles per hour and is designed for all types of travelers.

DOT Rustic Roads coordinator Jane Carrola says Wabeno submitted the application that was accepted...

"....it covers portions of county highway "C" and loops on Bay Shore, Camp 1, Kuffner and Indian Market roads. Rustic Road designation comes from the state, the road remains in local jurisdiction and control...."

The road is in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and includes access to the Knowles Creek Impoundment and Interpretive Trail among other sites. Carrola says the road will be signed soon.

Carrola  says Wisconsin originated the Rustic Road program..

"...this program is a Wisconsin original, started more than 40 years ago to preserve lightly traveled country roads, for the leisurely enjoyment of hikers, bikers, motorcyclists and motorists...."

More than 700 miles of specially-designated Rustic Roads have been established through the DOT.
