Most Vilas County Sex Offenders In Housing Compliance: Fath

Vilas County Sheriff's Department

A recent sweep by Vilas County law enforcement and U.S. Marshals found a high residency compliance rate among convicted sex offenders.

The Marshals along with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections and the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office conducted the residency verification checks.

On August 13th law enforcement checked the addresses of 50 registered sex offenders in Vilas County says Sheriff Joe Fath...

"...Our detective went along with them to make sure the sex offenders were where they were supposed to be. So the residences they had registered, they checked these. I think they found two or three registrants who weren't living where they had documented where they said they would be living. The registry personnel are going to follow up and see if that is a violation and make a referral to the District Attorney's office if warranted..."

Fath says they do the checks twice a year. He says one check is with the U.S. Marshals and the other with the local probation and parole office...

"...The U.S. Marshals are assigned to the Sex Offender Task Force in Wisconsin. They always send the U.S. Marshal along. It's a whole day running around the county checking on people. I was really happy that we had such a high rate of compliance...."

Law enforcement monitors more than 25,000 Wisconsin sex offenders statewide. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections maintains a database for the general public. We have a link here.
