State Secretary To Attend Rhinelander Veterans Day Ceremonies

It's Veterans Day. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors the fallen, this day is set aside to honor all veterans for their service to the nation.

Each year, Ken Krall takes a few minutes to check with the person whose job it is to serve all state veterans.

Today he talks with Mary Kolar,  a retired military officer who is the Wisconsin Secretary-designee of Veterans Affairs . She will be in Rhinelander today...

Kolar will attend the Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Monument on the Oneida County Courthouse lawn at 11:00 a.m. today. The public is invited.

Dozens of other ceremonies are being held today across the region.

Wisconsin Secretary-designee of Veterans Affairs Mary Kolar is the guest as the Oneida County Veterans Council holds it's annual Veterans Day program in Rhinelander this morning.

Unlike Memorial Day, which honors the fallen, this day is set aside to honor all veterans for their service to the nation. Kolar says the theme for this year's Veterans Day is service, recognizing the service of the millions of men and women....

"..Who have left home and made multiple sacrifices to ensure our security in the world. It's very appropriate that we come together. I look forward to being in Rhinelander on Monday for Rhinelander's Veterans Day observance. You will see that it's a very non-partisan event, recognizing veterans and their service to our country..."

Kolar says a key challenge is getting the word to veterans about services available to them...

"...For example, the challenge of ...preventing death by suicide by veterans. It's estimated that as many as two-thirds of veterans who decided to take their lives have not used any VA services, whether it's state or federal..."

Kolar says it's estimated there's 345,000 veterans living in Wisconsin. .
