WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- Seventh Congressional District Republican candidates, State Senator Tom Tiffany and Jason Church, faced off in a debate on Thursday night.

Throughout the debate Tiffany focused on what he's done as a state senator in Wisconsin and how he'll continue to make critical votes in Washington D.C. "You want a proven conservative to send to Washington D.C., you can count on me. I've made those tough decisions and I'll make them again in Washington D.C.," Tiffany said.

Jason Church focused on service in the military, the lessons he learned there and his desire to continue serving his country. "When I came back to Wisconsin, I realized something. That even though the Taliban took my legs, America's enemy's did not extinguish my desire to serve," Church said.

The two candidates agreed on many issues including education and their pro-life stances. They're biggest disagreements came when discussing the federal budget.

Another Republican candidate, Michael Opela, announced that he'll run as a write in candidate for the special election. The need for this special election comes after former congressman Sean Duffy resigned from the seat in November.

The special primary is scheduled for February 18th. The special election will take place on May 12th.
