New Food Pantry On the Table for Rhinelander

Salvation Army USA West

A new food pantry could be coming to town, if a Rhinelander woman can find the right distribution space.

WXPR’s Natalie Jablonski sat down with Chrissie Peterson who thinks Ruby’s Pantry would benefit the Northwoods.

Chrissie Peterson says Ruby’s Pantry would be held one day a month, and would serve working class families.

“The target market that I think Ruby’s pantry is for is those familes less fortunate that live paycheck to paycheck. With Ruby’s Pantry you pay 15 dollars for roughly 100 dollars worth of food.”

Ruby’s Pantry is a faith-based organization that distributes food to 36 locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  There’s no income cap for shopping at Ruby’s Pantry, and Peterson says paying a small amount of money makes it feel less like charity.

“I know firsthand what it’s like to stand in line at a lot of the food pantries that I’ve participated in. A lot of families would rather go without than have to stand in line. It’s such a pride thing.”

Peterson says she’s having trouble finding a warehouse space to use one day out of every month. She says once she finds a space, a food delivery could be just a few days away.

She says Ruby’s Pantry can bring in up to 30,000 pounds of food or up to two semi-loads in one day.
