Ruby's Pantry Heading to Lac du Flambeau

Kevin Marsh

Ruby’s Pantry will deliver to another distribution site in the Northwoods.  Lac du Flambeau will host the once-a-month food distribution on second Tuesdays at the Bingo Hall.

Gloria Cobb is a case worker with the Lac du Flambeau economic support department.  She says many families in the area are feeling the financial strain.

“Especially with the propane crisis, I believe there’s some tough decisions that families are making out there, how do I pay for propane? Well hopefully by adding a little bit more food to their cupboard, that will lessen the stress on families.”

Lac du Flambeau does not have a food pantry on the reservation.  The tribe does administer an emergency food distribution program, as well as Foodshare benefits.

Cobb says nearby Lakeland and Boulder Junction food pantries increasingly serve Lac du Flambeau residents as well.

“With the economics being the way they are, the lack of jobs, - we’re really seeing a need for emergency food, not only within the tribe but in the community as a whole.”

There’s no income restrictions on participating.  Ruby’s Pantry asks a $20 donation in exchange for a large basket of food.  The organization did its first full-scale pick-up in Rhinelander this week.
