Conference To Focus On Diabetes

The 11th Annual Northwoods Diabetes Update Conference is set for Tuesday in Minocqua. The conference is designed for healthcare professionals, but the public is invited to attend sessions beginning at 1 p.m. at no charge. The Conference is sponsored by UW-Superior at Reuland's Catering and Conference Center.

Zona Wick from the Iron County Health Department will talk about Iron county's successful pilot project "Healthy Living With Diabetes". That project focused on issues relating to people who can't naturally control blood sugar...

"....we found that not only was it a successful program because we have such a high incidence of diabetes not only in our county but in our state and country, they all had that diabetes in common so they were really supportive of one another...."

The American Diabetes Association reports if trends continue one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050. Those numbers are significantly higher among some groups, including Native Americans and African Americans.

Sherry Ashby, a registered nurse and diabetes educator at the Peter Christianson Health Care Center in Lac du Flambeau says there are cultural consideration when working with Native Americans and diabetes...

".....there's a cultural difference when you come into Lac du Flambeau and you have to respect it. And if you can respect it and you can listen, which is an extremely important part of the Native American community...."

The morning session has three speakers and is geared for health professionals. The afternoon session is free and open to public starting with registration at 12:30 p.m.
