All Wisconsin calls will require dialing the area code

Pixabay.com

Starting this week people in Wisconsin and parts of Michigan will have to dial local numbers using 10 digits — the area code plus the seven-digit phone number.

Previously, those people could place a call to a number in the same area code without dialing the area code.

The change will affect both landlines and cellphones in all of Wisconsin’s six area codes and four area codes in Michigan.

It's part of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline rollout.

Starting next summer, anyone in the country can dial 988 to reach the lifeline, so area codes that have those digits as the middle three numbers have to change to accommodate.
