Plow drivers need to have a plan when snow arrives

When snow starts piling up, there is a method to the routines of plow drivers.

The Marathon County Highway Department has 20 state routes and 16 county routes, and they're each assigned to a different driver.

They say they make sure to tackle the busiest roads first.

"We usually give 51 and 29 a little more attention because they're 24 hour service routes." said John Bangart, Maintenance Supervisor.

While the highway department takes care of the main freeways and county highways, local roads and streets are left to the cities, which also have their own priority routes system.

Despite plows only coming around once or twice a day, residents say it's all part of living in Wisconsin.

"It's winter, I mean, what do you expect, and the road crews are doing the best they can, highways I think take priority of course." said Debbie Sanders, a Wausau resident.

She said that the best thing to do is drive slowly, and appreciate the services the city provides.

"You gotta keep up with how many gazillion roads there are in Wausau, so we have to be patient and just thankful that they do it." said Sanders.

City and County officials asked the community for patience, above all else, to drive safely on the roads.
