GTac Mine, Bulk Sampling Proposal Up For Public Comment
Members of the public have a chance to weigh in on an open pit mine proposal in Iron County next week.
The DNR is holding an info session and public hearing on August 15th in Hurley. Staff will provide details about Gogebic Taconite’s plan for bulk sampling, where the company would remove 4-thousand tons of rock for analysis. DNR mining spokesperson Ann Coakley says the hearing will also cover GTac’s overall mining plan…which has been submitted to the DNR in a preapplication.
“It is their conceptual plan for moving forward with the mine and the hearing is also on that. And that I think we’re worried that’s kind of being lost, and the public’s going to think this is just on the bulk sampling. But indeed the hearing is also to gain comments on their preapplication notice.”
Next week’s hearing is not the only chance to voice opinions on the proposed mine. Coakley says the 30-day comment period is open until September 3rd.
“The day of the meeting they can submit written or oral comments. And then also the comment period is open right now and will end on September 3rd for written comments.”
The hearing will run from 10 am to 8 pm, with DNR info sessions starting at 10 am and 5 pm. Comments can also be sent to Larry Lynch at the DNR by mail or email. More details are available on the DNR website.
