Update: Three Die In Weekend Snowmobile Crashes In The Northwoods

Two people have died in unrelated snowmobile crashes Saturday morning in Vilas county, and a third person was killed in Iron County early Sunday.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Office reports they got a call about the crash at 12:53 a.m. Sunday.  A snowmobile had left trail 10 in the Town of Mercer and hit a tree.  The rider was said to be unresponsive.

Emergency workers tried to save the 40-year-old man’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the  scene by the Iron County Coroner.  The man was from Illinois. 

The DNR and the Iron County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the crash.

The Vilas County Sheriff's Department reports their most recent accident happened in the woods near Plum Lake in the Town of Plum Lake. That crash was reported at 9:02 a.m. Saturday.  One person was reported dead in the crash, a 27-year-old man from Illinois.

Earlier Saturday, the Sheriff's Department reports they received another call shortly after 4:00 a.m.. that a snowmobile had struck a tree near the shoreline of Little St. Germain Lake in the Town of St.Germain. When emergency responders arrived, they found the operator to be dead.

He was identified as a 38-year-old man from Illinois.

At the same time, another snowmobiler was out looking for the crash site and went through the ice on Little St. Germain Lake. This man was able get out of the water and had no injuries.

Names of the operators killed in the crashes have not been released.
