Train Derails in Merrill, Police Ask Public to Avoid Area

A train derailed in Merrill near the Center Ave. viaduct early Wednesday morning.

Two train cars derailed and turned onto their sides. Two other lumber cars derailed, but are still standing upright.

It happed at about 1:30 a.m., Merrill Police Chief Corey Bennett told WXPR. No one was hurt.

Canadian National Railway, which owns the tracks where the train derailed, said the cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Preliminary reports show there were no leaks, and no dangerous goods were involved.

Merrill Police are asking onlookers to stay away from the scene.

In a Facebook post, the police department said it can be dangerous to be near the scene while repair operations are underway.

Merrill Police are controlling traffic in the area.

The Agra Pavilion parking area is closed.

The department said repair crews will be working on the trains throughout the day.
