Hurley's Paavo Nurmi Marathon Cancelled for This Year
Organizers of Wisconsin’s oldest marathon could not reach the finish line this year.
Hurley’s Paavo Nurmi scheduled for August has been cancelled.
Race Director Rita Franzoi made the announcement in a post on the Paavo Nurmi Facebook page.
She says the race faced a new set of obstacles this year.
Franzoi says the event typically has over 400 volunteers from start to finish. She said some are still unsure how involved they want to be with community events and social gatherings.
Franzoi also said she did not feel comfortable asking sponsors for money, given the uncertainty for business related to staffing, supplies and the overall cost of keeping the doors open.
Franzoi says they are actively seeking one or more people to begin the process of assuming Race Director responsibilities for 2022.
