Conover-Phelps Trail Complete, Open House This Saturday

Great Headwaters Trails

Vilas County is adding to its long list of bike trails.

The Conover-Phelps Trail is officially open.

Work on this segment of theGreat Headwaters Trail started a decade ago.

This summer, construction wrapped up on the last 1.9 miles of the Conover-Phelps Trail.

From the community park in Conover, people can now bike to Lakefront Pines Park in Phelps on a graded trail that keep bikers off the road and winds through beautiful Northwood scenery.

Laura Boll is the Executive Director of the Phelps Chamber of Commerce. She said they’re already seeing it used.

“As it was being completed and before the shoulders and kind of the final touches were finishing up, there were a lot of people starting to use it that saw the pavement had been laid and it was there,” said Boll. “I’ve seen and a lot of business have seen people on the trail which is really cool. We’re hoping it’s just an added thing that brings more people to town and helps put Phelps on the map a little bit more.”

Boll believes the trail will be a great addition to the community and help bring people to the area.

“Outdoor recreation and biking and walking and hiking specifically are just huge in the area. Having something like this that connected to an existing trail and goes to a neighboring town and comes right into our downtown is really a nice amenity,” said Boll.

If you haven’t hit the trail yet, Boll encourages people to come out to the trail open house Saturday, September 4.

It’s from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Lakefront Pines Park in downtown Phelps.

“We’ll have groups of volunteers there with information and to share coupons for free ice cream and just to get people out to know it’s done and to use it and to come on out and enjoy it. We’re excited for that,” she said.

There will also be maps available at the event.
