New local program invites girls to mountain bike, develop female empowerment

Little Bellas

A new program in the Northwoods seeks to empower girls through mountain biking.

Rhinelander now claims the newest chapter of a national organization called Little Bellas.

After more than a year of work, local resident Val Foley was just told Rhinelander has been awarded the 43rd chapter of Little Bellas, which spans 17 states.

Foley hopes to share her passion for mountain biking with girls while helping them develop confidence and life skills.

“Little Bellas is a nonprofit group. They have chapters all over the United States. They are for little girls to empower them by the use of bikes and skills,” Foley said. “They give little girls a sense of community and belonging and also a sense of ‘I can do this. I can do this.’”

Foley said mountain biking is generally dominated by men and boys.

She hopes Little Bellas can serve as a pathway to more involvement in the sport by young women.

Participants will develop their biking skills in a fun environment while being teamed with adult mentors.

“This organization is run by women for women. The mentors are all female. This is a totally female program. They have some very strong leaders,” Foley said.

The program will be based at the Washburn Lake trails west of Rhinelander and is for girls ages seven to 13.

Sessions will start in August and will offer scholarships to participants and free bikes if needed.

“It’s another sport that they can get into and have some fun with. What better thing than to have your daughter like to go outside?” Foley said.

Right now, Foley is seeking female mentors.
