A local snowboarder won gold at the mixed team snowboard cross event in the Beijing Olympics over the weekend.

Iron River’s Nick Baumgartner, along with Lindsey Jacobellis, set a record at the Winter Olympics’ first ever mixed team snowboard cross competition.

40-year-old Baumgartner and 36-year-old Jacobellis are also among the oldest snowboarders to medal during the Winter Games.

Baumgartner says being a veteran comes with its advantages.

He says his years of experience have made him comfortable riding very close to other competitors to use their draft, which may scare younger racers.

This is Baumgartner’s first ever gold and his fourth Olympics.
