Late ice could impact fishing opener

WAOW Television

Some lakes in the Northwoods still have ice on them, which could impact next week's fishing opener.

Crescent Lake west of Rhinelander could be seen Wednesday with most of the lake covered with some type of ice.

Officials say if the ice sticks around for the fishing opener, plan accordingly.

That means having proper gear on your person and in your boat, as well as driving the boat carefully if you do find open water.

"There could be some open areas of ice that could be floating yet, use caution, go slowly, you don't want to hit those with your boat, that could obviously cause some pretty big issues," said Jacob Holsclaw, a recreation warden with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

It's also strongly encouraged everyone wear a life jacket while out fishing because of the cold water temperatures.

Wisconsin's fishing opener is May 7.
