Animal shelters in the United States take in an estimated 6 to 8 million cats and dogs each year.

The Oneida County Humane Society alone cares for nearly 100 animals each day. That adds up to almost 800 animals a year.

Listen to the full interview with Animal Care and Operations Director Amanda Haydon to learn more about what it takes to care for all of these animals and how to adopt a new pet.

WXPR’s Nonprofits of the Northwoods spotlights organizations in our area that are working to strengthen the community – whether that’s by lending a hand to someone in need, educating about the arts, or caring for the environment.

Erin Gottsacker joined WXPR in December 2020. As a Morning Edition host and reporter, Erin reports on the issues that matter most in the Northwoods.
