Land O' Lakes Art Show Spotlights Youth Work

March is national Youth Art Month.  Land O' Lakes Area Artisans, or LOLA, is putting the spotlight on young artists’ work with a gallery exhibit.

The show features almost ninety works from local elementary and homeschooled students.

LOLA Programming Director Wendy Powalisz says she’s busy framing the art pieces…which are loosely inspired by the four seasons.

“I’m seeing some penguins, some owls, and lots of flowers – I think the kids are thinking spring as well. It’s very bright, very colorful.”

A visiting artist will give a critique of the work at a reception later this month.  Powalisz says it’s an opportunity for kids to have their art taken seriously.

“I think sometimes we may think of art as a little bit of fluff in our schools systems, but boy it’s really a necessary component of their learning. And I think when kids see their art up on the wall and framed , they know that we value what they’re doing.”

The state of Wisconsin recognizes Youth Art Month with a statewide art show, where selected works will be on display in the capitol.  State coordinator Tasha Newton says it’s a chance to showcase what’s going on in schools.

“I think it’s vital for everyone in our communities to see all the positive creations that are coming out of art and what we actually do in our art program. It’s a great way to advocate for your art program, and a great way for you to get your students’ artwork out on a state level.”

The Land O' Lakes show opens this weekend and runs until March 22nd, with a reception on the 15th.
