More Students To Get Grants, Deductions From State

Governor Walker signed a measure in 2014 labeled the "Blueprint For Prosperity", designed to get students into high-demand technical careers.

Stopping at Nicolet Area Technical College Tuesday, Walker said he will propose next week another round of proposals to help technical college students. One proposal is to increase grants to students at technical colleges. Walker says the state's 16 technical colleges exceeded the 5,000 students sought in the "Blueprint" proposal, so more money is being given to technical college students...

"....this new funding, which we're asking the legislature to approve in the "State of the State"(address) next week will add about an additional 1,000(students)....5,000 now, we'll have an additional 1,000 on top of that . That's particularly to help students in need afford access to our great technical colleges...."

If approved, the College Affordability Legislative Package allows deducting all student loan interest....

“.....now we take the next step of taking full, 100 percent deduction of interest on student loan debt...in the past it had been capped at $2,500. We want to make sure if students had student loan interest that that’s fully deductible...”

Walker says he will fully announce the package during next week’s State of the State address.

Democrats were quick to blast Walker as offering too little. They pointed out Since 2011, Wisconsin has risen to the third highest percentage of college graduates with student loan debt. They says Walker still opposes letting students refinance the debt at a lower interest rate.
