Higher Cancer Rates Here One Topic Of November Meeting

Air Force Material Command

One of the topics to be discussed are higher than average rates of cancer in Oneida county as part of an upcoming Community Conversation on Health.

The Oneida County Health Department, in partnership with Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin is hosting the event next month.

Assistant Director Marta McMillion says it's a time to pause and think about the region's health..

"...We're looking to hear about health in general. What people think is working, what is missing, why some people in the community are healthier than others, that sort of thing..."

She says community members are invited to come share their ideas and experiences about the community health. But one focus...says McMillion..is the higher rates for some forms of cancer in Oneida county...

"...We were approached by Advancing A Healthier Wisconsin because of some of the rates were are seeing, typically lung cancer, breast cancer and colorectal cancer. During the years of 2008-2013 the mortality rates were higher than expected in parts of our county. That's something we want to dig into and see if people have some perspectives or ideas on this...."

The Community Conversation on Health is set for November 8 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the the Oneida County Health and Aging Building next to Trig's in Rhinelander. Light refreshments will be served and door prizes will be raffled off.

More information is available at the Oneida County Health Department.
