Citizens Hope to Learn From Minnesota Mines

Iron County citizens are holding a forum next week. It will look at issues brought on by iron mining in Minnesota.  Organizer Terry Daulton says the guest is research scientist Nancy Schuldt water quality specialist with the Fond du Lac Tribe.

“And she works on a lot of the issues relating to water quality and wild rice, and also potential things like mercury contamination that would affect tribal members there in Minnesota.”

Daulton hopes the forum will shed light on what northern Wisconsin might expect if company Gogebic Taconite moves forward with an iron mine application.

“She has some expertise from what’s happened there historically and currently, and hopefully will share some lessons for us in Wisconsin of things we should be conscious of in looking at permitting and moving forward with a mine.”

The talk will be held at the Mercer Community Center on October 10th.  It’s part of a series of forums organized by residents concerned about the prospect of an iron mine in the Penokee Hills.  Last month’s forum looked at characteristics of the Bad River Watershed.
